Installation steps for customer-owned generation agreements are determined by size. Systems with a capacity of 300 kilowatts (kW) or less are typical for homes and smaller businesses.
Owner and installer responsibilities
- Design, install, operate and maintain any generation system installed.
- Follow interconnection rules from Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSCW) and meet all We Energies tariff requirements, applicable laws and regulations (local, state and federal).
- Maintain liability insurance (equal to or greater than amounts indicated in PSC 119) or prove financial responsibility by another means agreeable to us.
- Notify us if a material modification is made to the generation facility, such as changes in electrical output or interconnection equipment.
- Properly install, operate and maintain specified protective devices.
- Obtain authorizations, permits and licenses required for construction and operation of the generating facilities at your expense.
- Complete the steps for interconnection.
Our responsibilities
We will promptly carry out our role in the interconnection steps and meet all required timelines to process your interconnection application. We will provide you with any information you need to complete your interconnection.

Interconnection steps
These steps are required by state law to interconnect to our distribution system.
- Notification
- Call 800-714-7777 to inform us of your intent to interconnect an electric generating system to our distribution system.
- We will respond within five working days and provide necessary materials for your interconnection application.
- Interconnection application
Complete and submit the applicable Distributed Electric Generation Forms.

- Application review
We will notify you within 10 working days if your application is complete or if corrections are needed.
Track interconnection applications by work request number (updated monthly)
- Engineering review determination
- When your application is complete, we will determine if an engineering review is needed.
- We will notify you within 10 working days if an engineering review is needed, and state any associated charges.
- If an engineering review is not needed, we will notify you of application approval. Proceed with installation.
- Installation of customer generation
- You must agree to address any existing metering or service issues to meet current requirements.
- You will install your generating equipment within a mutually agreed-upon time frame and notify us when construction is complete.
- System testing
- You are required to submit applicable commissioning fees and provide photos of the installation.
- We will perform witness commissioning tests, perform an unintentional islanding test or verify protective equipment settings at our expense, or waive testing in writing.
- Testing approval / rejection
- We will notify you of approval or rejection of interconnection.
- If approved, you will receive a written statement of final acceptance and cost reconciliation.
- If not approved, you may take corrective action and request new system testing.
- Interconnection agreement
- Sign the appropriate Distributed Generation Interconnection Agreement and Surplus Energy Agreement to begin operation of your generating equipment.
