Large building energy use for benchmarking

City of Milwaukee requires commercial buildings 50,000 square feet or larger to report yearly energy use data. The deadline for reporting 2025 data is Sept. 30, 2026. The city’s ordinance covers an estimated 530 commercial buildings, plus additional city government and school properties. Refer to Milwaukee’s benchmarking website for details on the program.

Our customers can request electric and natural gas use information needed to comply with the ordinance. After submitting our form, you’ll receive an email with your building’s energy use information. Requests typically take about two business days to process.*

Get started

Benchmarking information request form

Fill out the form to receive your building’s electric and/or natural gas use data. You will need to provide the following information:

  • Address of building.
  • Your name as manager or owner of building.
  • Email address to send building’s energy information.
  • Meter number for each electric and/or natural gas meter at your building.

Landlord requirement

For buildings with four or fewer tenants with We Energies accounts, or a building with one tenant responsible for at least half of the building’s electric and/or gas use, you are required to submit our release form signed by each tenant/account holder.
Benchmarking third-party authorization form

Note: If you do not own the building, such as a property manager or a third party, you are required to submit a third-party authorization form regardless of the number of tenants or consumption per tenant.

Receiving your data

After you submit the request form, we aggregate monthly electric and/or natural gas use for your building using meter numbers you submitted. We email you the following:

  • Number of accounts aggregated by We Energies.
  • Aggregated monthly usage for previous calendar year.

We also will notify you by email if we need more information or third-party authorization.

*Gathering this information is a manual process and will take time to complete. We encourage you to request your information as soon as possible.

  • You must provide complete and correct meter numbers. Failure to provide such information will result in incomplete aggregate energy use information for your building.
  • No individual tenant (customer) usage information or account numbers will be reported.
