New service checklist

The checklist below describes your steps and our steps for new service installation.

Planning and design

Customer / Builder

  • Submit completed application with plat of survey or site map or CAD file
    Include any future planned decks, pools, fences, septic system, existing private facilities, obstacles or other structures and meter locations.
  • Include future decks, pools, fences, additions or structures on your property

  • Location of electric and/or natural gas meters
  • Mark the location of septic system, obstacles or customer-owned facilities (i.e. propane lines, sewer laterals, sprinkler systems, ornamental lighting and electric lines to a barn or garage. A locating company can be hired to mark private lines

We Energies

  • Confirm receipt of completed application
  • Design new service
    • Includes reviews for municipal/county/state permits and environmental or historical resources
  • Mail letter including ready for service card, design sketch and cost (if applicable)

Construction and installation

Customer / Builder

  • Send payment (if applicable) and signed sketch
  • Prepare building site:
    • Locate and mark private facilities or obstacles
  • Clear 10-foot-wide path along service route
  • Ensure grade is within 4 inches of final elevation along service route
  • Install meter socket at agreed-upon location and obtain inspection (electric)
  • Mark exact location of natural gas meter placement
  • Send completed Ready for Service Card when site is ready
  • Maintain building site until service is installed:
    • No obstructions placed along route (lumber, equipment or soil piles)
  • No changes to grade
  • No changes to agreed-upon meter location

  • Apply for permit, as needed
  • Schedule service installation

Potential project delays

  • Incomplete application (missing load and equipment data, plat of survey or site plan, etc.)
  • Customer’s required paperwork not received
  • Receipt of municipal electric inspection
  • Failure to mark private underground facilities or obstacles
  • Site conditions or site not ready
  • Rocky terrain
  • Weather
  • Emergency repairs or outages
  • Permitting
  • Environmental or historical considerations
  • Easement (if applicable)
  • Road restrictions
