Description
The Energy Partners device (EPD) is a radio-controlled switch housed in a small plastic box, about 7 inches wide, 8 inches high and 3 inches deep. The EPD is mounted at no cost to you on the outside of the house near the air conditioner compressor. It is controlled by a radio signal that we send. Your EPD is programmed to respond only to the cycling option you selected.
How It Works
When air conditioning cycling begins, we send out a signal that activates a timer and opens up a switch in the EPD connected to your air conditioner’s low voltage circuit. When the switch is opened, it interrupts the signal from the thermostat in your house that tells the air conditioner to cool. While the switch is open, your fan will continue to run, but your compressor doesn’t operate.
This is similar to when your thermostat is set higher than the temperature in your house. The timer in the EPD keeps the switch open for the amount of time based on the program option you selected. When the time expires, the circuit will close and your central air conditioner will resume normal operation.
About the Lights on the Energy Partners Device
There are a series of lights on the front of the EPD; from left to right, three smaller red lights (positions 1, 2, and 3), a small green light (position 4) followed by a large red light on the right (position 5). On newer models there are two smaller lights (position 5 and 6) instead of the large light on the older model. These lights indicate if your air conditioner is being cycled.
If only lights 4 and 5 are on or blinking, the EPD is in normal mode and not controlling your air conditioner:
If the lights on the left side (positions 1 and 2) are on or blinking, the EPD is in cycling mode and the Energy Partners program is activated.
Note: The EPD is designed so that it will not allow the compressor to work for up to 5 minutes after power to the air conditioner has been interrupted. The lights on the EPD will look exactly the same as when the air conditioner is being cycled. After 5 minutes, the EPD will release control and the air conditioner should operate normally.
If NONE of the lights are on, one of the following situations exist:
- Your EPD has been de-activated, which means you have been removed from the Energy Partners program. You can verify that you are no longer on the program by calling 800-772-4797.
- No power is going to your compressor. Check your circuit breaker or fuse and the air conditioner disconnect box.
