Construction Update
Nov. 2007
Milestone Achieved
Portions of the Carbon Capture Project installation moved from the construction phase of the project to the systems-commissioning and start-up phases in mid-November. This significant project milestone includes:
- The completion of the chiller system and heat exchanger cooling towers.
- The installation of the chilled ammonia scrubber vessels and related pumps, which now are being tested with water.
- The completion of flue gas supply-and-return piping between the plant stack and the chilled ammonia process.
Power and plant auxiliaries, such as water and compressed air, have been supplied from the power plant and connected to the demonstration system. When the regenerator equipment is ready, the steam will be connected. Still in process are the initial equipment and instrumentation check-out and control system verification.
Flue Gas Supply
The carbon dioxide removal pilot is a two-step process. The equipment relating to step one (flue gas chilling and scrubber vessels) has been installed and is being tested. For the second step of the process, dealing with carbon dioxide removal and recovery, equipment is being installed now.
From the flue gas of a coal-fueled generating facility, this new chilled ammonia technology has the potential to achieve a highly efficient carbon capture rate of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
