Dig-in emergencies

Make sure you know what to do if you or a co-worker damages an underground utility.

Electric facility contact

  • Call 911 and call us at 800-662-4PWR (4797) immediately.
  • Warn others to stay away.
  • Do NOT touch the equipment and the ground at the same time.
  • Stay on the equipment unless it is on fire.
  • If you must exit the equipment, jump clear and land with your feet together. Shuffle away with feet together on the ground. Shuffling reduces the risk of electric shock.

Gas pipeline contact

  • Call 911 and call us at 800-261-LEAK (5325) immediately.
  • Warn others to stay away.
  • Keep all ignition sources (like vehicles) away, as this can cause gas to ignite.

Unmarked or incorrectly marked facilities

If you encounter unmarked or incorrectly marked facilities, do not assume they are abandoned. Call us first. We will verify the status of the facility in question.

Other utility contact

  • Notify your supervisor and the utility owner immediately.
  • If you cut a fiber optic cable, do not look into the end of it. This can cause serious eye damage even if the light source is not visible.
